With the way 2020 is headed, it may be time to head for the hills…of Marin. Making a move like this is a big decision, bigger still if doing it with kids, and requires some exploration as well as an open mind.

Comprised of over 20 towns and countless microclimates from southern Sausalito, west to Stinson, and north to the Sonoma border, you could find yourself in the oak studded rolling hills, wind swept waterfront, rugged mountains, or even agricultural and pastoral farmlands. Certainly you want to consider the landscape that makes your heart sing. But there is much more to consider! With that in mind, you’ll want to avoid these all too common mistakes…

Mistake #1. Falling in love with the house without knowing the town While you can  make modifications to your new house, you cannot change what lies outside of it. Yes, you’ll be living in that house, but you’ll be living outside of it—going to school, playing sports, hanging with the neighbors, and creating memories. Make sure the town syncs with your lifestyle. If not, that house will never feel like “home.”

Mistake #2 Choosing a popular town because it’s popular Sure, there’s a reason some towns are popular— an easy commute, great schools and a killer farmer’s market…but that does not mean it’ll be a perfect fit, so be sure to stay open to other locations in Marin. Take the time, before you buy, to explore all the Main Streets and backroads so you can be confident with the choice you do make!

Mistake #3. Moving to be closer to friends and family Of course, the proximity to friends and extended family is important. But do they need to live next door? You will find that Marin County is so easy to navigate, you can reach your destination within 15 minutes. So again, open yourself to all your options.

Mistake #4. Prioritizing travel time to San Francisco We get it—you’re leaving your urban comfort zone and the life you’ve built there. But, at the same time, focusing exclusively on the minutes spent in transit is a mistake. Why? Many companies have realized SIP employees are productive and may eliminate that daily grind. Also, Marin has loads of good restaurants and night life options that (almost) rival your fave SF haunts. Besides, there is Uber when you really need a night out.

Mistake #5. Making “Main Street” the most important factor Living in the city you’re no doubt used to having ample amenities just steps away. The reality? Online shopping is now the norm. Besides, you might find you enjoy jumping in the car for easy access to even more of the activities, amenities and other essentials you and you and your family need.
