There are many excellent reasons to live in Marin County, and I’m happy to report we have four more!

Earlier this week, the Marin IJ reported that PG&E announced plans to (1) narrow the scope of power shutdowns this year by creating “substation microgrids” backup generators, which will allow PG&E to keep the electricity running in certain areas that are at lower risk for wildfires. Eight substations will be placed throughout Marin, including two in San Rafael and one each in Belvedere, Bolinas, Corte Madera, Inverness, Mill Valley and Novato, though their exact locations and ‘turn on’ dates have not been announced.

PG&E is also planning to (2) install 45 “sectionalizing devices” which will limit the area of the massive shutdowns we suffered with last fire season, according to PG&E spokeswoman Deanna Contreras said. County officials, however, have had trouble getting details from PG&E on where the devices would be located, or when they will be installed.

Contreras also said PG&E (3) will increase its aircraft fleet from 35 to 65 helicopters, two of which will have infrared technology to inspect troubled areas after dark. As many homeowners here will remember, the company must inspect all of its equipment and repair any damage before restoring power.

You may also recall that more than half of Marin’s cell towers stopped working when PG&E shut off power throughout the county for four straight days in late October. Marin County officials don’t have authority over cell towers, but (4) the county Board of Supervisors has backed a proposed state bill that would require telecommunications companies to have at least 72 hours of backup power for all towers in high-risk fire areas. The bill, SB 431, was authored by Sen. Mike McGuire, whose district includes Marin.
